Members approve change in Shirt Project funding cap

The C am pus Life Council kicked off its year Monday by discussing new du Lae revisions, deba ting the addition of an ATM on North Quad and voting to inc rease the e a rn in g p o ten tia l o f The Shirt Project. M e m b e r s s u p p o r t e d a r e s o l u t i o n f ro m t h e S t u d e n t Senate to e liminate the c a p on p ro f i t s from T h e S h i r t in o r d e r to i n c r e a s e f u n d i n g fo r th e S tudent Union. Proponents of the m e a s u r e saw it as a win-win p ropos i­ tion. "It 's a g re a t way f o r th e S t u d e n t U n ion to fu n d m o r e n o n a l c o h o l i c ac tiv i ties , w h ich is ex ac t ly w h a t this c a m p u s n e e d s , " s a id S tu d e n t U nion t r e a s u r e r J a m e s Je sse . “C hari t ies a re bene f i t ing , and the S tu d e n t Union is benefiting." Currently, the Shirt Project is u n d e r a $200,000 cap, with ha lf of the profits go ing to c h a r i ty , a n d th e o th e r h a l f going to the S tudent Union. Jesse p ro ­ posed at the m ee ting th a t any money r a i s e d o v e r th e in i t ia l $ 2 0 0 ,0 0 0 be split, with 00 p e rc en t going to charity a n d 40 p e r c e n t to S t u d e n t U n io n , respectively. Between $ 2 1 8 ,0 0 0 an d $ 2 2 5 ,0 0 0 is r a i s e d a n n u a l l y , J e s s e s a i d . T h i s would give the S tuden t Union add i t ion ­ “I t’s a great way for the Student Union to fu n d more non-alcoholic activities, which is exactly what this campus needs. ”
